Why it matters

Where the water goes when your gutters fail

A roof sheds a lot of water in a heavy rain, and all of it runs to the edge. When a gutter overflows, leaks at the seams or drains right next to the house, that water ends up against the foundation and the boards the gutter hangs on.

The cost shows up later: a wet basement, rotted fascia, and soil washed out along the house.

Signs you need new gutters

  • Water spills over the front of the gutter in a heavy rain, even when it is clean.
  • Drips or stains at the seams and corners.
  • Gutters sag or pull away from the house.
  • Water pools along the foundation, or the basement gets wet when it rains.
  • The fascia boards behind the gutter are stained or rotted.
  • Ice builds up in the gutters every winter.

Process

How a gutter installation works

A gutter installation with us runs in seven steps. The boards behind the gutter get checked before anything new goes up, and your written estimate lists how long the work will take.

  1. We inspect it, free

We look at the roof edge, the gutters, the downspouts and where the water ends up when it hits the ground, and photograph what we find.

  2. You get a written estimate

How many feet of gutter, how many downspouts, where they go and the price, on paper. If we find a problem behind the old gutters, we stop and show you before we touch it.

  3. We take the old gutters down

The old gutters and downspouts come off, and we haul them away.

  4. We check the fascia

If the board behind the old gutter is rotted, you get photos and a price before we replace it. A new gutter needs something solid to hold on to.

  5. We cut each run in one piece

Each side of the house gets a seamless gutter cut to its length, so there are no joints along the run to leak.

  6. We hang and pitch them

The gutters go up pitched toward the downspouts, so the water runs off instead of sitting in them.

  7. We place the downspouts and clean up

Downspouts go where the water can drain away from the foundation. Then we clean up and go over the finished gutters with you.

The parts of a gutter system

A gutter only works if every part does. A clean gutter with a downspout in the wrong spot still puts water against the foundation.

  • Gutters

Seamless, one piece for each run of the house, so there are no joints along the length to leak.

  • Hangers

The brackets that hold the gutter to the fascia. With too few, or loose ones, the gutter sags under water and ice.

  • Downspouts

The pipes that carry water from the gutter to the ground. How many you need depends on how much roof drains into each run.

  • Elbows and extensions

The bends at the bottom that turn the water away from the house, so it does not drain right at the foundation.

  • End caps and corners

The only joints on a seamless run, and the first place an older gutter tends to leak.

  • Fascia

The board the gutter hangs on. If it is rotted, a new gutter has nothing solid to hold on to.

What else goes into new gutters

Sizing and pitch

The gutter size and the number of downspouts depend on how much roof drains into each run and how steep it is. A long, steep roof puts far more water into a gutter than a short porch roof does.

Where your house is changes the gutters

In the wooded parts of Morris, Sussex and Hunterdon, leaves and seeds pack the gutters every fall and spring. Up north and west, ice builds in gutters that are clogged or pitched wrong. Near the shore, in Ocean and Monmouth, a nor'easter can drop a lot of rain in a few hours.

Gutter installation questions

It depends on how many feet of gutter the house needs, how many downspouts, how high the roof edge is, and whether the fascia behind the old gutters needs replacing. You get a written price after we have measured and looked.

Gutters made in one piece for each run of the house, instead of short sections joined together. With fewer joints, there are fewer places for them to leak.

It depends on how much roof drains into each run and how steep it is. A long, steep run needs more capacity and more downspouts than a short porch roof. The size is written into your estimate.

Often the downspouts are dumping water right next to the foundation, or the gutters overflow above it. We check where the water goes when we inspect. If the gutters are not the cause, we tell you.

When it is rotted, yes. We show you photos first, and you get a price for it before we do anything about it.

If there are trees over the roof, it is worth deciding now, since the guards go on with the gutters. They cut down on cleaning but do not end it. We tell you whether they make sense for your house.

We install gutters in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. If your town is in one of those, we can come out.
