Guards keep leaves and seeds out of the gutter and cut down on cleaning, but fine grit still gets through. We check that the gutters are sound first. Every guard job starts with a free inspection, photos and a written estimate.
Why clogged gutters overflow onto the house
A gutter packed with leaves cannot carry water to the downspout. The rain backs up and spills over the front, onto the fascia, the siding and the ground next to the foundation. In winter the wet leaves freeze, and the ice adds weight the hangers were never meant to hold.
Guards keep most of that out of the gutter. They are not a fix for a gutter that already leaks or sags.

Signs guards may be worth it
- The gutters fill with leaves again soon after you clean them.
- Trees hang over the roof, or seeds and pine needles pile up in the gutters.
- Water spills over the front of the gutter in the first heavy rain of the fall.
- Plants or moss are growing in the gutters.
- The downspouts clog and back up.
- You would rather not be on a ladder every fall.

If your gutters leak at the joints, sag or pull away from the house, guards on top only hide the problem. We tell you that and price new gutters instead. What gutter replacement involves
How a gutter guard job works
A gutter guard job with us runs in five steps. The gutters get checked before any guard goes on, and your written estimate lists how long the work will take.
We inspect it, free
We look at the trees over the roof, what is sitting in the gutters, and whether the gutters leak, sag or pull away. We photograph what we find.
You get a written estimate
Whether guards make sense for your house, which runs get them and the price, on paper. If the gutters themselves are failing, we tell you before you pay for guards.
We clean out the gutters
The leaves and grit come out of the gutters and downspouts before any guard goes on.
We fit the guards
The guards go on along each run and get fitted around the corners, so there are no open gaps for leaves to get in.
We walk you through it
We go over the finished gutters with you and tell you what upkeep the guards still need, since fine seeds and grit still get through.

What a gutter guard keeps out, and what it does not
Guards cut down on cleaning. They do not end it. Here is what happens to what lands on your roof once a guard is on.
Leaves
Mostly kept out. They sit on top of the guard instead of packing the gutter, though wet leaves can stay stuck there until they dry.
Twigs and pine needles
Larger pieces stay out. Pine needles can wedge into a guard and have to be brushed off now and then.
Seeds
Small seeds can slip through or pile up on top. Maple seeds in the spring are the usual reason a guarded gutter still needs a look.
Grit from the shingles
Fine granules wash off the roof with every rain and settle in the bottom of the gutter over time. No guard stops them.
Ice
Guards do not stop ice. In a cold winter, snow and ice can still build up on top of the guard and along the eave.

What to know about gutter guards
Upkeep
Plan on a look now and then, especially after the trees drop their seeds. Brushing off the top of a guard is a lot easier than scooping out a packed gutter from a ladder.
Where your house is changes the guards
In the wooded parts of Morris, Sussex and Hunterdon, leaves and seeds pack the gutters every fall and spring, which is where guards save the most ladder work. Up north and west, ice still builds in gutters in a cold winter, guards or not.

It depends on how many feet of gutter the house has, how high the roof edge is, how many corners there are, and whether the gutters need work before guards go on. You get a written price after we have measured and looked. If guards will not help your house, we tell you that instead.
No. They cut down on cleaning a lot, but fine seeds and grit still get through, and the guards need a look now and then. We tell you that before you buy them, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
That depends on the trees over your house. We go over the options with you at the inspection, and the type we recommend is written into your estimate, so you know exactly what goes on your gutters before any work starts.
If they are sound, pitched right and not leaking, yes. Guards on a bad gutter just hide the problem. If your gutters leak at the joints, sag or pull away from the house, we tell you and price new gutters instead, so you do not end up paying twice.
No. Ice can still build up on top of the guard and along the roof edge in a cold winter. Ice along the gutters every winter is often an attic problem as much as a gutter one, so we check the attic ventilation while we are up there.
Often not. If very little lands in your gutters, a cleaning now and then may cost less than guards. We would rather tell you that than sell you something your house does not need. The inspection photos show what is actually sitting in your gutters.
We put gutter guards on houses in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. If your town is in one of those, we can come out.
