Repair or replace

Repair or replace: how we make the call

We would rather replace ten panels than sell you a whole house of siding you do not need yet. After the inspection we go through the photos with you and tell you what we would do if it were our house.

Repair
A repair usually makes sense when
  • The damage is limited to a few panels.
  • The rest of the siding still flexes instead of cracking.
  • You can live with a slight color difference, or the damage is on a side few people see.

Replace
A replacement usually makes sense when
  • Panels are cracked or warped across whole walls.
  • The vinyl has gone brittle and cracks when it is touched.
  • Water is getting behind the panels, or the sheathing is soft.

Local conditions

What New Jersey weather does to siding

Siding takes sun, wind and cold on every wall, and each side of the house wears differently.

Summer sun fades the south and west walls first, which is why an older house can be two shades of the same color. Cold makes vinyl stiff, so a ball, a ladder or a branch in January can crack a panel that would have flexed in July.

Near the shore, in Ocean and Monmouth, strong wind gets under loose panels and pulls them off the wall.

How the siding is fastened, and which walls need the most attention, depends on where your house is and which way it faces.

How a siding job works with us

You call or send the formTell us what you are seeing. A stain on the ceiling, shingles in the yard, a chimney dropping mortar into the fireplace.
We come out and inspect it, freeWe get on the roof when it is safe to, take photos, and find the actual source. A wet ceiling is rarely directly under the hole.
You get a written estimateScope, materials, and the number, on paper. The number on the estimate is the number. If we open something up and find something underneath that changes the scope, we stop and show you before we touch it.
We do the work and clean upWe run a magnet over the lawn and driveway for nails before we leave.

FAQ

Siding questions we hear a lot

Still not covered? Call 732-682-9251 and ask. No cost, no script.

Vinyl siding replacement, siding repair, and siding installation on new homes and additions. Each one has its own page with more detail.

Sometimes exactly, often close. Vinyl fades in the sun, so even the same color from the same maker can look different next to a panel that has been up for years. We tell you before we start how close the match will be.

Yes. If only a few panels are damaged and the rest is sound, we tell you that and price the repair. You see the photos, so you do not have to take our word for it.

House wrap and sheathing. The siding sheds most of the water, and the wrap behind it stops what gets past. If that layer is torn or the wood is soft, new siding over it does not fix the problem.

No. You get the photos and a written estimate. If you go with someone else, you owe us nothing.
