Guards or new gutters

Guards or new gutters: how we make the call

Guards on a bad gutter just hide the problem, and new gutters are a waste if the old ones only need guards. After the inspection we go through the photos with you and tell you what we would do if it were our house.

Guards
Guards usually make sense when
  • The gutters are sound, pitched right and not leaking.
  • The main problem is leaves and seeds from trees over the roof.
  • You are tired of getting on a ladder every fall.

Local conditions

What New Jersey weather does to gutters

Gutters take all the water off the roof in a storm, and in winter they hold the ice.

In the wooded parts of Morris, Sussex and Hunterdon, leaves and seeds pack the gutters every fall and spring. Up north and west, ice builds in gutters that are clogged or pitched wrong, and the weight pulls them off the fascia.

Near the shore, in Ocean and Monmouth, a nor'easter can drop a lot of rain in a few hours. A gutter that is too small, or has too few downspouts, overflows and puts that water right against the foundation.

The size, the pitch and where the downspouts go depend on your roof and on where your house is.

We do the work and clean upWe run a magnet over the lawn and driveway for nails before we leave.

Gutters made in one piece for each run of the house, instead of short sections joined together. With fewer joints, there are fewer places for them to leak.

Often the downspouts are dumping water right next to the foundation, or the gutters overflow above it. We check where the water goes when we inspect. If the gutters are not the cause, we tell you.

When it is rotted, yes. We show you photos first, and you get a price for it before we do anything about it.
