When to replace

When old gutters are past fixing

Many older gutters are short sections joined together, and every joint is a place to leak. Once the joints open up and the hangers loosen, the gutter sags, water sits in the low spots, and it spills over onto the fascia and the ground next to the house.

The cost of waiting shows up in other places: rotted fascia, a wet basement, and soil washed out along the house.

Signs your gutters need replacing

  • Drips or stains at the seams and corners after it rains.
  • Gutters sag between the hangers or pull away from the house.
  • Water spills over the front even when the gutter is clean.
  • Water stays standing in the gutter long after the rain stops.

Process

How a gutter replacement works

A gutter replacement with us runs in six steps. The boards behind the old gutters get checked before the new ones go up, and your written estimate lists how long the work will take.

  1. We inspect it, free

We look at the gutters, the joints, the downspouts and the boards behind them, check where the water ends up on the ground, and photograph what we find.

  2. You get a written estimate

Which gutters come down, what goes up in their place and the price, on paper. If the gutters only need guards, we tell you that instead.

  3. We take the old gutters down

The old gutters and downspouts come off the house.

  4. We check the boards behind them

If the fascia is rotted, we show you photos first, and you get a price for it before we do anything about it. A new gutter needs something solid to hold on to.

  5. We put up new seamless gutters

Each run goes up in one piece, pitched toward the downspouts, so there are no joints along the length to leak.

  6. We place the downspouts and walk you through it

The downspouts go where the water can drain away from the foundation. Then we go over the finished gutters with you.

What sets the price

What goes into the price of new gutters

No two houses drain the same, so a price per house does not hold up. These are the things that move the number.

  • Feet of gutter

How long each run of the house is. A house with a lot of corners and short runs takes more work than one with a few long straight ones.

  • Downspouts

How many there are and how far they run. More roof draining into a gutter means more downspouts to carry it.

  • Height of the roof edge

A second story eave takes taller ladders and more setup than a one story ranch.

  • The fascia behind the gutter

If the boards are rotted, they get replaced before anything new hangs on them. You see the photos and the price for that before it happens.

  • Guards

If there are trees over the roof, it is simplest to decide now, since guards go on with the new gutters.

  • Gutters sagging, leaking or rusted through?

Worth knowing

What else changes a gutter job

Where your house is changes the gutters

In the wooded parts of Morris, Sussex and Hunterdon, leaves and seeds pack the gutters every fall and spring. Up north and west, ice builds in gutters that are clogged or pitched wrong, and the weight pulls them off the fascia. Near the shore, in Ocean and Monmouth, a nor'easter can drop a lot of rain in a few hours.

Gutter replacement questions

Still not covered? Call 732-682-9251 and ask. No cost, no script.

It depends on how many feet of gutter come down, how many downspouts go back up, how high the roof edge is, and whether the fascia behind the old gutters is rotted. A one story ranch and a tall colonial are very different jobs. You get a written price after we have measured and looked.

They leak at the seams or corners, they sag or pull away from the house, or water spills over the front even when they are clean. Stains or soft wood on the fascia behind them are another sign. We check all of it at the free inspection and show you the photos.

If one joint is leaking on otherwise sound gutters, maybe. When they leak at several joints, sag, or pull away from the house, patching one spot tends to move the leak to the next joint. If your gutters only need cleaning or guards, we tell you that instead of selling you new ones.

When it is rotted, yes. A new gutter needs something solid to hold on to, and a rotted board lets it pull away again. We show you photos first, and you get a price for it before we do anything about it.

Usually the gutter is too small for the roof above it, it is pitched the wrong way, or there are too few downspouts. A long, steep roof puts far more water into a gutter than a short porch roof does. New gutters get sized and pitched for your roof.

If there are trees over the roof, it is worth deciding now, since the guards go on with the gutters. They cut down on cleaning but do not end it, because fine seeds and grit still get through. We tell you whether they make sense for your house.

We replace gutters in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. If your town is in one of those, we can come out.
