Why patching old siding stops working
Siding keeps water out of your walls. Once panels crack or warp across a wall, water gets behind them every time it rains, and you usually do not see the damage until the wall is opened up. New panels patched into brittle old ones do not stop the water coming in next to them.
The expensive part is behind the panels: soft sheathing, wet insulation and rot in the wall.

Signs the siding needs replacing, not repairing
- Panels are cracked or warped across whole walls.
- The vinyl has gone brittle and cracks when it is touched.
- The walls have faded unevenly, two shades of the same color.
- Panels bulge, rattle in the wind, or have come loose.
- Stains, peeling paint or soft spots on the inside of an outside wall.
- Water is getting behind the panels, or the sheathing feels soft.

If the damage is limited to a few panels, we would rather replace those than sell you a whole house of siding. We tell you when a repair will hold. How siding repair works
How a siding replacement works
A siding replacement with us runs in seven steps. The wall under the old siding gets checked before anything new goes up, and your written estimate lists the expected number of days.
We inspect every wall, free
We walk all sides of the house, check the panels, trim and the inside of any wall that shows stains, and photograph what we find.
You get a written estimate
Which walls, what goes on them and the price, on paper. If we open something up and find a problem underneath that changes the scope, we stop and show you before we touch it.
We protect the house
We cover the plants and walkways along the walls and move what we can away from the house.
We strip the old siding
The old panels and trim come off the walls we are replacing, down to the house wrap and sheathing.
We check the wall underneath
If the sheathing is soft or the wood behind it is rotted, you get photos and a price before we replace it.
We put the wall back together
Torn house wrap gets repaired or replaced, the windows and doors get flashed, and then the new vinyl panels and trim go up.
We clean up and walk you through it
We haul the old siding away, run a magnet over the lawn and driveway for nails, and go over the finished walls with you.

What a siding wall is made of
The panels are only the outside layer. When water gets past them, the damage shows up in the layers behind.
Vinyl panels
The part you see. They shed most of the rain and take the sun and wind.
Trim and corner posts
The pieces around windows, doors and corners that the panels tuck into. Gaps here let water in behind the siding.
House wrap
A sheet over the wall behind the siding. It stops the water that gets past the panels.
Window and door flashing
Tape and metal around each opening that send water out of the wall instead of into it.
Sheathing
The boards the wall is built on. When they are soft, water has been getting in for a while.

What else to decide with new siding
Choosing a color
Summer sun fades the south and west walls first, which is why an older house can be two shades of the same color. When the whole house is done at once, every wall starts out the same.
Where your house is changes the siding
Cold makes vinyl stiff, so a ball, a ladder or a branch in January can crack a panel that would have flexed in July. Near the shore, in Ocean and Monmouth, strong wind gets under loose panels and pulls them off the wall.
