Why it matters

What happens behind siding that goes up in a hurry

Siding sheds most of the rain, but not all of it. Wind drives water in at the laps, around the windows and at the corners. On a new wall, what stops it is the house wrap and the flashing behind the panels. When those are rushed or skipped, water gets into brand new sheathing, and nobody sees it until the wall is opened up.

The part that protects the wall is the part you cannot see once the panels are on.

When it is time to side the new work

  • The framing and sheathing on a new home or addition are done.
  • Windows and doors are set and waiting to be flashed.
  • House wrap has been up and out in the weather for a while.
  • An addition has to sit next to the siding on the rest of the house.
  • You want the new walls closed in before winter.

If your house already has siding that is cracked, warped or faded, that is a different job. The old siding comes off and the wall under it gets checked first. What siding replacement involves

How a siding installation works

A siding installation with us runs in six steps. The wrap and flashing are done before any panel goes up, and your written estimate lists how long the work will take.

  1. We look at the walls, free

We walk the new walls, check the wrap, the window and door openings and the corners, and photograph what we find.

  2. You get a written estimate

Which walls, what goes on them and the price, on paper. If something on the wall needs fixing before siding goes on, we show you first.

  3. We check the house wrap

Torn or loose wrap gets repaired, so the whole wall is covered before anything else goes on.

  4. We flash the windows and doors

Flashing goes around each window and door opening, so water that gets behind the siding is sent back out instead of into the wall.

  5. We hang the trim and panels

The corner posts and trim go up first, then the vinyl panels, fastened so they can move as they warm up and cool down.

  6. We walk you through it

We go over every finished wall with you, including the spots around the windows and doors.

Siding installation questions

Still not covered? Call 732-682-9251 and ask. No cost, no script.

It depends on how much wall there is, how tall it is, how many windows and doors need flashing and trim, and the siding you pick. A small addition and a whole new house are very different jobs. You get a written price after we have walked the walls.

Vinyl. We go over colors and styles with you before the job starts, and what you pick is written into the estimate. If the new work sits next to existing siding, we talk about how close a match to expect, since older vinyl fades in the sun.

Sometimes exactly, often close. Vinyl fades in the sun, so even the same color from the same maker can look different next to a panel that has been up for years. We tell you before we start how close the match will be.

Siding sheds most of the water, but wind drives some of it behind the panels. The wrap stops what gets past, and the flashing around windows and doors sends it back out. When those are skipped, new sheathing gets wet and nobody sees it until the wall is opened up.

It depends on the house and the budget. Siding with a foam backer is stiffer, holds up better against dents, and adds a little insulation. We go over whether it makes sense for your walls at the inspection, and what you pick goes in the estimate.

We install siding in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. If your town is in one of those, we can come out.
