After the storm

Why storm damage is easy to miss from the ground

Wind does not always tear a shingle off. Often it lifts the edge, breaks the seal that holds it down, and lets it fall back flat. From the driveway the roof looks fine. The next storm peels that shingle off, or drives rain up under it.

A roof with hidden damage from one storm is weaker going into the next one. Found early, it is a repair.

Signs the storm damaged your roof

  • Shingles in the yard or in the gutters after a windy night.
  • Shingles that look creased, folded back or out of line with the rest.
  • Flashing bent or pulled loose around the chimney, a wall or a vent.
  • A limb on the roof, even one that looks like it only brushed it.
  • A new stain or drip inside after the storm.
  • Gutters dented, sagging or pulled away from the house.

How a storm damage repair works

A storm damage repair with us runs in six steps. The photos come before any repair, and your written estimate lists how long the work will take.

  1. We inspect the roof, free

We get on the roof when it is safe to and look for what the storm did, including damage you cannot see from the ground.

  2. We photograph all of it

Lifted shingles, torn flashing, cracked deck boards. You keep the photos, so you have something to hand your insurance adjuster. We do not decide the claim.

  3. We tarp it if it is open

If the wind or a limb has opened up the roof and we can get a tarp on it, that stops the damage from spreading while we work out the real repair.

  4. You get a written estimate

What the storm damaged, what we will fix and the price, on paper.

  5. We repair the damage

Damaged shingles and flashing get replaced so the roof sheds water again. If a limb cracked the deck, you get photos and a price before we replace the wood.

  6. We clean up and show you

We run a magnet over the lawn and driveway for nails before we leave, and go over photos of the repair with you.

What we look for

What wind and falling limbs do to a roof

Storm damage is not always a hole. These are the kinds of damage that turn up on a roof after a storm.

  • Lifted shingles

Wind breaks the seal under the edge and folds the shingle back. It may lie flat again, but it is no longer stuck down.

  • Missing shingles

The underlayment under them is now the only thing keeping rain out, and it is not made to sit out in the weather.

  • Torn or bent flashing

The metal around a chimney, a wall or a vent pulls loose, and water runs in behind it.

  • Limb damage

A heavy limb can crack deck boards or a rafter, even when the shingles on top look only scuffed.

  • Gutters

Wind and falling limbs dent gutters or pull them off the boards they hang on.

  • Seeing any of these on your roof?

What else to know

Insurance

Insurers generally cover sudden damage from wind or a falling limb, and generally do not cover a roof that simply wore out. We photograph what we find so you have something to hand your adjuster. We do not decide the claim.

Where your house is changes the damage

In Ocean and Monmouth, wind off the water lifts shingle edges and salt air eats at exposed nails and metal flashing. Nor'easters hit everyone. When one comes through, the calls we get are mostly about lifted shingles, torn flashing and limbs on roofs.

FAQ

Storm damage questions

Still not covered? Call 732-682-9251 and ask. No cost, no script.

It depends on what the storm did. A few lifted shingles and a limb through the deck are very different jobs. We do not quote over the phone. You get photos of the damage and a written price after we have been on the roof.

Sometimes. Insurers generally cover sudden damage from wind or a falling limb, and generally do not cover a roof that simply wore out. We photograph what we find so you have something to hand your adjuster. We do not decide the claim.

Look for shingles in the yard or the gutters, flashing on the ground, or a new stain inside. A lot of wind damage cannot be seen from the ground, because a lifted shingle can fall back flat. Do not climb up to check. The inspection is free.

We would rather you did not. A wet roof after a storm is slippery, and limbs and loose shingles make it worse. Put a bucket under any drip, move what can get ruined, and call 732-682-9251. We are open 24 hours.

Sometimes. If the shingle is whole and only lost its seal, it can be sealed back down. If it is creased, cracked or torn, it has to be replaced, because a creased shingle will not lie flat and shed water again. The photos show you which is which.

Keep everyone out of the rooms under it. A limb that went through the deck can crack boards and rafters you cannot see from inside. A big tree often needs a tree service to lift it off before the roof can be repaired. Call us and tell us what you are looking at.

We repair storm damaged roofs in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. If your town is in one of those, we can come out.
